NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, March 12th (All times eastern)

Ottawa Senators (42-15-5) at Washington Capitals (22-33-7), 3 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators finish a three-game road trip today when they visit the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

On Friday, Ray Emery stopped 16 shots to lead the Senators to a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.

Daniel Alfredsson, Chris Kelly and Bryan Smolinski all netted goals in the opening 5:02 for the Senators, who have won six of their last seven contests and snapped a three-game losing streak against Atlanta.

The Sens currently sit atop the Northeast Division with 89 points -- two ahead of second-place Buffalo.

Ottawa will return home on Tuesday to host Tampa Bay.

Washington, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak ended in Friday's 4-3 shootout loss to visiting New Jersey. Scott Gomez scored two goals and Sergei Brylin netted the decisive goal in the shootout for the Devils.

Matt Pettinger, Bryan Muir and Dainius Zubrus tallied goals for the Capitals, while Olaf Kolzig allowed three goals on 27 shots.

Rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin failed to find the net for Washington and saw his seven-game goal-scoring streak end.

The Caps will host Buffalo on Tuesday.

Ottawa is 2-0 against Washington this season and 6-0-1 (1 tie) in the last seven meetings. The Sens have outscored the Capitals a combined 30-8 in those seven clashes.

The Senators are 5-0-2 (2 ties) in their last seven trips to Washington.
