NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, March 23rd (All times eastern)

New Jersey Devils (38-23-12-2) at Florida Panthers (27-31-14-3), 7:30 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils try to improve their playoff standing tonight when they visit the Florida Panthers at Office Depot Center.

The Devils have 90 points and are tied with Montreal for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

New Jersey and the Canadiens played Saturday, and Michael Ryder recorded a goal and an assist to lead Montreal to a 3-2 win at the Bell Centre. Jim Dowd and Alexei Kovalev also scored for the Canadiens.

Montreal earned three out of a possible four points in the home-and-home with the Devils after Friday's 1-1 tie. Jan Bulis added two assists in the win.

Martin Brodeur made 22 shots but failed to pick up his 400th career win as the Devils saw their three-game unbeaten streak come to an end (2-0-1). John Madden and Sergei Brylin lit the lamp for New Jersey.

After Montreal had seemingly sealed things with an empty-netter, New Jersey drew within a goal in the waning minute. However, the Devils could not find the equalizer.

Jersey, which had lost six of its last 10 road games, plays the second test of a four-game trip tonight and travels to Tampa on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. Miroslav Satan and Derek Roy each scored to lead Buffalo at the Office Depot Center.

Vaclav Nedorost scored the sole goal for the Panthers, who have dropped two straight on the heels of a three-game win streak. Florida is 11 points behind the New York Islanders for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East with seven games left on the schedule.

The Devils have won two straight and five of the last six meetings with the Panthers. New Jersey is also 10-1-1 in its last 12 at Florida.
