Washington Capitals (14-29-5-2) at New York Rangers (19-20-7-4), 7 p.m.
(Sports Network) - Less than a week after being traded to New York, Jaromir Jagr welcomes his former team to Madison Square Garden for tonight's game between the Rangers and the Washington Capitals.
Jagr has played two games with the Rangers since being traded to the Caps for winger Anson Carter on Friday afternoon and the results of the two tilts couldn't have been more different.
Jagr's tenure began with a whimper, as the Rangers were trashed 9-1 by the Ottawa Senators at the Corel Centre on Saturday. Jagr was held pointless with a minus-2 rating and New York was handed its worst defeat since losing 10-2 on March 6, 1993, to the Quebec Nordiques.
However, Jagr posted a goal and two assists in his MSG debut to give New York a 5-2 victory on Tuesday night.
Brian Leetch added a goal and an assist for New York, while Jussi Markkanen made 38 saves. Mark Messier, Petr Nedved and Matthew Barnaby also scored for the Rangers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
New York, 1-2-1 in its last four home games, opens a home-and-home series with Buffalo on Friday night at MSG.
The Capitals are coming off a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. Mark Recchi and John LeClair both finished with a goal and three assists to lead Philadelphia to the 4-1 win at the MCI Center.
Mike Grier scored for the Capitals, who suffered their third straight loss. This was the first home game for Washington without Jagr.
Carter, who was obtained in the deal with New York, was a minus-2 and recorded one shot on net in his return game to the Capitals. He began his career with the club in 1996.
Washington is 6-16-2-1 on the road this season.
Washington's 35 points are the second-lowest in the Eastern Conference, as the team is five ahead of Pittsburgh in the standings.
The Capitals are 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings with the Rangers and are 7-3-3 in the previous 13 matchups in New York.
