Washington Capitals (1-1-1-0) at Montreal Canadiens (1-1-0-0), 7:30 p.m.
(Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals resume their six-game road trip tonight when they visit the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
After splitting their first two games of the season at home to the Islanders and Thrashers, the Caps skated to a 2-2 tie in Toronto on Monday. Robert Lang's goal 8:49 into the third period forced the stalemate, and Peter Bondra tallied as well. Olaf Kolzig finished with 34 saves, while Sergei Gonchar assisted on both goals.
The Capitals began the trek shorthanded as defensemen Brendan Witt (facial lacerations) and John Gruden (strained groin) are both expected to miss roughly a week with their injuries. Witt's absence left Gonchar as the only available blueliner with significant NHL experience.
Washington's Jaromir Jagr, after posting a combined two goals and two assists in the first two contests, was kept off the scoresheet Monday. Jagr has helped the Caps net a league-leading 11 goals thus far, including five on the power play.
The Capitals will resume their current venture Friday in Dallas.
Montreal, meanwhile, followed up a season-opening loss in Ottawa with a 4-0 victory over host Toronto on Saturday. Jose Theodore stopped 21 shots to record his 18th career shutout to back the effort.
Mike Ribeiro, Richard Zednik, Sheldon Souray and Michael Ryder tallied for the Canadiens, who had looked simply awful against the Senators. Theodore's effort was especially encouraging as he tries to re-gain the form that won him the Hart and Vezina Trophies in 2002.
Defenseman Andrei Markov collected two assists for Montreal, giving him three helpers in the first two games of the season.
Montreal begins a six-game homestand tonight and will welcome Pittsburgh to town on Thursday.
The Capitals went 2-1-1 against the Canadiens last season, but the Habs are 4-2-1 in the last seven meetings. Washington is 1-2-1 in its last four trips to the Bell Centre.
