NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Vancouver
(Saturday, February 16th)
Final Score: Vancouver 4, Edmonton 2
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Markus Naslund and Daniel Sedin each had a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Canucks downed the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2, at GM Place.
Henrik Sedin had three assists while Roberto Luongo made 24 saves for the Canucks, who have won two of their last three games.
Marty Reasoner and Kyle Brodziak each lit the lamp for the Oilers, who had won four of five coming into the game. Mathieu Garon stopped 22-of-25 shots in the loss.
With the score tied in the third period, Vancouver grabbed the lead with a pretty play. Naslund had the disc in the high slot and sent it down to Henrik Sedin at the left circle. He immediately fired the puck across the goalmouth to his brother Daniel, who one-timed the puck past Garon with 12:15 to play.
The Oilers had a chance to tie the game with a power play with 3:45 remaining when Alex Edler went off for a holding penalty, but were unable to get any past Luongo.
Edmonton then pulled Garon shortly after the power play expired, but Alex Burrows' empty-net goal sealed the win with 40 seconds to go.
That wasn't the end of the game, however, as after the empty-net goal there were several fights on the ice and, after that mess was cleaned up, there were two more stoppages due to fights.
In all, a total of 14 fighting majors and eight game misconducts were handed out. The teams combined for 42 infractions and 193 penalty minutes.
The Canucks drew first blood in the game as Naslund threw a shot on net from the right side that hit off the stick of an Edmonton player and squeezed by Garon at the 3:08 mark of the first.
Edmonton, though, tied the game with 1:18 left in the first as Sam Gagner sent a centering pass from behind the net to Reasoner, who redirected the disc past Luongo.
Vancouver grabbed a 2-1 lead just 54 seconds into the second. On a two-man advantage, Sami Salo blasted a shot from the right point that found its way through a screen.
However, the Oilers again tied the contest with 2:46 remaining in the second as Brodziak knocked in a rebound from his knees for his 10th goal of the season.
Vancouver plays in Minnesota on Tuesday...Edmonton plays in Nashville on Tuesday...Each team has won three games in the season series...Edmonton went 0-for-2 on the power play while Vancouver finished 1-for-8.
