NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Phoenix

(Saturday, February 16th)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Los Angeles 3

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata's power-play goal in the third period lifted the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings in the front end of a home-and-home set at Jobing.com Arena.

Ed Jovanovski had a goal and two assists and Ilja Bryzgalov made 22 saves in the win for the Coyotes, who have won two straight after a four-game losing streak.

Dustin Brown, Raitis Ivanans and Alexander Frolov each lit the lamp for the Kings, who had won four of six coming into the contest. Dan Cloutier started in net and stopped 18-of-21 shots, but was pulled after two periods due to flu-like symptoms, and Jason LaBarbera stopped 15-of-16 in the loss.

These teams will meet in Los Angeles on Monday.

Phoenix held a two-goal lead to start the third period, but the Kings scored twice in the first half of the frame to tie the contest.

However, Michael Cammalleri was called for interference and Jaroslav Modry was whistled for tripping a bit later to give Phoenix a 5-on-3 power play.

The Coyotes took advantage of the opportunity as the team kept several clearing attempts in and Vrbata slipped a wrister from the left circle past LaBarbera for a 4-3 advantage with 7:06 to play.

Los Angeles pulled LaBarbera from the net in the final minute of the game, but were unable to get the equalizer.

The Coyotes jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game as Jovanovski's one-timer from the slot found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season.

Los Angeles, though, tied the game less than three minutes later as Ivanans slipped a shot past Bryzgalov for his third goal of the season.

However, Phoenix took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Shane Doan sent a pass from the left point to the low left side and Joel Perrault swept the puck into the net with 4:31 left in the frame.

The Coyotes increased their lead to 3-1 at the 6:44 mark of the second period as Daniel Winnik went from the backhand to the forehand and from the left side threw the puck in front where it hit off the skate of a defenseman and got past Cloutier.

Bryzgalov made eight saves in the middle frame.

Los Angeles tied the game with a pair of goals in the third period.

Just 37 seconds in, Brown's power-play goal made it a 3-2 contest and at the 8:38 mark of the frame the Kings tied the game as Frolov banged home a rebound for his 16th goal of the season.
