NHL Game Summary - Boston at Toronto
(Saturday, February 16th)
Final Score: Toronto 4, Boston 3 (OT)
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Darcy Tucker's second goal of the game, with 1:21 left in overtime, sent Toronto over Boston, 4-3, at Air Canada Centre.
On the game-winner, Alex Steen accepted a pass from Tomas Kaberle in the left circle, took a couple strides to let Tucker catch up on the right wing, and dished over so the one-time enforcer was able to tap the puck in with his stick as he was checked from behind.
Dominic Moore and Nik Antropov also lit the lamp for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a two-game skid. Vesa Toskala made 24 stops in the victory.
Glen Murray and Zdeno Chara picked up a goal and one assist each in defeat for the Bruins, who have dropped three of four. Dennis Wideman also scored while Tim Thomas allowed all four goals on 36 shots.
Murray's second goal since his return to the lineup put Boston up by one 5:48 into the game, but Moore roofed a shot over Thomas in the high slot with 9:28 remaining in the first for a 1-1 tie.
Although the Leafs dominated the action in the second, with a 12-3 shot advantage, the Bruins took a 2-1 lead when Wideman's wrister from the point sailed through traffic in front and in with 1:24 left in the period. The power-play goal was his eighth score of the season, tying his career high set two years ago with St. Louis.
The Leafs knotted the game with 5:42 left in regulation via a two-man advantage. Kaberle faked a shot, then slid a pass to Mats Sundin in the left circle. He dished to the right side of the net for Tucker, who slammed the puck home.
"Some old man in the Toronto Sun wrote this week that I was finished. I hope he can eat his words with this." said Tucker, who has six goals in the last five games.
One minute, 51 seconds later Toronto went ahead as Tucker circled the Bruins net from left to right and slid a pass to Antropov, who was alone in the slot and got the puck past Thomas.
Unbowed, the Bruins fought back and tied the game with 49.8 seconds to go as Sturm slid a shot from the point which hit Toskala and bounced behind him. Chara alertly found the disc in the crease and popped it in.
"It's crazy how this game goes sometimes," Murray said. "We had so many chances in the first that we should have been ahead three or four. That let them in the game and gave them the chance to come back."
After dropping the first three games in the series this season, Toronto has won the last two, one in shootout, one in overtime...Boston had won eight of the last 11 meetings...The Bruins had also won three straight and five of their last six on the road...Boston defenseman Aaron Ward returned to the ice after being sent to the hospital with a neck injury after absorbing a check Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
