NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Phoenix
(Thursday, February 14th)
Final Score: Phoenix 5, Dallas 2
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata had a goal and two assists, as the Phoenix Coyotes snapped a four-game skid with a resounding 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars.
Shane Doan, Daniel Carcillo, Niko Kapanen, and Nicholas Boynton also tallied for the Coyotes, who had won just one game in their past seven coming into the contest. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 32-of-34 shots in the win, the back end of a home-and-home.
The Coyotes lost to the Stars, 2-1, on Monday.
Matt Niskanen and Jussi Jokinen scored for Dallas, which wasn't able to set a new franchise record for consecutive wins. The Stars had won seven straight coming into the game, the fourth time that has happened in team history. Marty Turco allowed four goals on 26 shots in the loss.
The Coyotes got on the board first, 11:29 into the game, on a power-play goal. Doan picked up his 19th tally of the season after a loose puck drifted into the left circle, and he ripped a blazing shot past Turco.
Jokinen tied up the game just 2:23 later, but Carcillo gave Phoenix a 2-1 lead after the first period, as he scored with 3:28 left in the frame.
Neither team could push the puck across the goal line in the second period until Kapanen put Phoenix up by two with 1:18 left. After Turco stopped a Craig Weller slap shot from the slot, the rebound came loose, and Kapanen stuffed it in to give the Coyotes a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Shortly into the third period, Vrbata recorded a shorthanded goal to make the chances of a Stars comeback more unlikely. Carcillo sat in the box for elbowing, and Dallas was trying to coordinate an attack in its offensive zone.
But a pass out to the point got past the blue line, Vrbata picked it up and raced across the neutral zone on a breakaway. Despite being harassed by a Dallas player, Vrbata shifted left and flicked a backhander over Turco at the 5:22 mark, putting Phoenix up 4-1.
Niskanen scored four minutes later, but Dallas got no closer. Boynton added an empty-net goal with one minute left to seal the game.
Phoenix was 1-for-6 on the power play...Dallas was 0-for-3 with the extra man...Steven Reinprecht had two assists for the Coyotes.
