NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Nashville
(Tuesday, February 5th)
Final Score: Nashville 1, Carolina 0
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Chris Mason stopped 31 shots and picked up his fourth shutout of the season, as the Nashville Predators blanked the Carolina Hurricanes, 1-0, at the Sommet Center.
J.P. Dumont scored the only goal of the game, and Nashville won its third in a row. Jason Arnott and Alexander Radulov picked up the assists as the Predators won the first meeting between the teams since January 13, 2006.
"I felt really good today," Mason said. "I was seeing the puck well and the guys let me see it. We contained rebounds and eliminated second chances."
Cam Ward was often brilliant in making 33 saves, but had one get through, as the Hurricanes lost their second in a row. Carolina is 0-2 on its current five-game road trip.
The game was deadlocked, as Ward and Mason combined to stop 45 shots in the first and second periods.
The goaltenders continued their solid play for most of the third period, and just past the midway point of the stanza, Ward denied a flurry of Predators shots.
But with 8:01 left, a long pass up the left boards got to Radulov just across the blue line. He who passed from the high slot to the right circle to Arnott. Arnott, in turn, sent a cross-ice pass to Dumont, who one-timed the puck past Ward to break the scoreless tie.
"Once we settled down I thought both goaltenders played well and it seemed like there weren't going to be many goals for either team," Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said. "Our defense worked not as a group of five tonight, but as a team and stepped up and really kicked it up for the last five minutes."
Mason stopped eight shots in the third period to seal the win.
It was Mason's 12th career shutout...The teams were a combined 0-for-6 on the power play...Nashville improved to 3-0 on its current four-game homestand, and faces Tampa Bay on Thursday.
