Final Score: NY Islanders 4, Carolina 1
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Marc-Andre Bergeron scored twice and added an assist, and Wade Dubielewicz made 28 saves as the New York Islanders beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-1, in a New Year's Eve clash at the RBC Center.
Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko also tallied, and top-line center Mike Comrie notched a pair of helpers for the Isles, who have won five of their last six games, scoring 22 goals in that span. New York also won in Raleigh for the first time since April 2, 2004.
Craig Adams had the lone goal for Carolina, which has dropped three of four. John Grahame was yanked early in the second period after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Cam Ward turned aside nine shots the rest of the way.
After a scoreless first period, both clubs combined for five goals in the second -- including three by the Isles in a 3:39 stretch.
A power-play marker put the visitors on top, as Bergeron worked his way into a shooting position, and from the point, rifled a shot that sailed past Grahame at 2:06.
New York went back on the man-advantage a short time later, as Carolina defenseman Mike Commodore was whistled for holding. Guerin's tally came quickly thereafter, as he also found some open space and beat Grahame to the glove side off a long slapshot at 3:28.
Fedotenko then got in behind the defense and, from the top of the goal mouth, knocked home a feed by Andy Hilbert at 5:45.
Carolina answered back 32 seconds later, as Adams aggressively pursued the puck and tapped his own rebound through the skates of Dubielewicz to cut it to 3-1.
Bergeron restored the two-goal edge on the power play when he ripped a laser shot past a screened Ward from just inside the blue line at 13:20.
