NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at New Jersey
(Friday, December 28th)
Final Score: New Jersey 2, Buffalo 1 (SO)
Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Zach Parise scored the only goal of the shootout as the New Jersey Devils downed the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, at Prudential Center.
After Martin Brodeur used a poke check to stop Ales Kotalik for the first attempt, Parise skated in on Ryan Miller and snapped a shot over the goaltenders right pad.
Brodeur then made a right pad save on a Tim Connolly backhander and used the glove to stop Thomas Vanek to hang on for the win.
Mike Mottau scored the lone regulation goal for the Devils, who have won four of their last five games. Brodeur stopped 26 shots for the win.
"We've been playing well and that's the bottom line," said Brodeur. "We have the confidence that if you keep going, keep throwing pucks (at the net) something's gonna happen eventually and it's been happening for us."
Kotalik scored the only goal while Miller stopped 34 shots for the Sabres, who have dropped two straight after a six-game winning streak.
"That last ten minutes of the first period was all theirs and I really thought the second period was all ours and we kinda sat on it a little bit in the third," said Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff. "Still it was the type of game we knew we'd be in and we thought we'd get through it."
The Devils were all over Buffalo in the first period and held a 13-2 shot advantage after 20 minutes, but Miller made several strong saves and the first period ended scoreless.
Miller's best save came when Aaron Asham was awarded a penalty shot with 3:34 left in the frame. Asham skated in on net and tried to pick the right corner, but Miller made a shoulder save on the shot.
Buffalo got on the scoreboard just 4:36 into the second period as Kotalik's shot from the right boards got by a screened Brodeur.
Miller stopped six shots in the middle session to keep New Jersey off the board.
The Devils finally got a puck past Miller thanks to a lucky bounce. Colin White had the puck at the left point and cranked a shot that went wide. However, it bounced off the backboard and went to the right side, where Mottau banged it in with 6:23 left in the game.
The Devils face the Islanders in New York on Saturday...The Sabres play in Pittsburgh on Saturday...Buffalo went 0-for-4 on the power play while New Jersey failed to score in its two chances.
