NHL Game Summary - Carolina at NY Rangers
(Wednesday, December 26th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 4, Carolina 2
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr scored twice and the Rangers tallied three times in the third period to down Carolina, 4-2, at Madison Square Garden.
Daniel Girardi had a goal and an assist while Henrik Lundqvist made 20 saves for the Rangers, who ended a three-game slide. Scott Gomez and Brendan Shanahan each contributed two assists in the victory.
Scott Walker and Eric Staal scored for the Hurricanes, who lost for the second time in their last five games. Cam Ward allowed all four goals on 35 shots.
Down one goal after two periods, Chris Drury tied the contest for the Rangers at 2-2 with a power-play goal just 1:38 into the third frame. Shanahan sent a pass to Drury at the right side of the crease and he quickly chipped a shot at Ward, and the puck managed to roll off netminder and over the goal line.
New York then took the lead at 7:06 on a goal by Girardi. With traffic in front, Shanahan snapped a wrister from the high slot that hit a Carolina defender in front. Girardi then raced in from his point position and tapped the loose puck home.
Jagr's second goal of the contest gave the Blueshirts a 4-2 lead near the half-way point of the final stanza. From near the left corner, Gomez centered a pass to Jagr, who fended off a Carolina defender and backhanded the puck past Ward.
With just under six minutes to play, Carolina went on a power play, but were unable to get any sustained pressure. The 'Canes also had a two-man advantage in the final minute and along with Ward pulled for an extra attacker, could still not score.
After a scoreless opening period, the home team grabbed a 1-0 lead 2:28 into the second stanza. Marc Staal's shot from the slot was stopped by Ward, but Jagr pounced on the rebound and sent it home for his first tally in the last 11 games.
Carolina responded and got on the board 2:10 after Jagr's goal on a short- handed tally by Walker. Mike Commodore feathered a wrister from the right point and Lundqvist made the stop. The rebound, however, kicked out to Matt Cullen at the right of the crease and he quickly fed the puck across to a streaking Walker, who one-timed the feed into the net.
A scary play occurred about midway through the second as Cullen was helped off the ice after an open-ice hit by New York's Colton Orr. Cullen, who had a cut on his nose, stayed down on the ice for several minutes before being helped to his skates and was eventually escorted to the locker room. Orr was penalized for interference on the play and was handed a game misconduct.
The Hurricanes managed to take a 2-1 lead at 16:19 of the second on Eric Staal's power-play goal. From the top of the point, Dennis Seidenberg ripped a heavy slap shot that Staal managed to deflect past Lundqvist.
