NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at St. Louis
(Sunday, December 23rd)
Final Score: Atlanta 3, St. Louis 2 (OT)
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Marian Hossa's goal 19 seconds into overtime sent Atlanta past St. Louis, 3-2, at Scottrade Center.
On the forecheck, Hossa stripped Blues defenseman Jay McKee in the slot, made a few rapid stick moves to work himself free, then lifted a wrister past Manny Legace for the game-winner.
"It was a bouncing puck and I saw their defenseman had trouble handling it, said Hossa. "It was a lucky takeaway from him and all of sudden I was behind him and I just had to deke the goalie and shoot it."
Ilya Kovalchuk and Mark Recchi also scored for the Thrashers, who have won four games in a row. Tobias Enstrom added a pair of assists and Kari Lehtonen needed just 18 saves to pick up the win.
Keith Tkachuk picked up a goal and an assist for the Blues, whose two-game win streak came to an end. Barret Jackman scored his first of the season and Legace stopped 22 shots in the loss.
Legace made 11 stops in the first period to keep the game scoreless, and he was rewarded as Jackman put the Blues up 1-0 by slamming home the rebound of Tkachuk's shot at 7:08 of the second.
Kovalchuk added his league-best 29th goal on a power play with 3:38 left in the stanza, and the game was deadlocked heading into the final 20 minutes.
Tkachuk gave the Blues a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 5:48 of the third but Recchi responded with his own man-advantage tally midway through the period for a 2-2 tie.
"I didn't think we had a lot of energy tonight," said Blues head coach Andy Murray. "Our normal energy was not there, and yet we were playing with enough structure that we were holding a lead. I thought their energy was higher."
The last meeting between the teams in the Gateway City was a 4-0 Blues win on December 14, 2002...Atlanta is 3-0-1 in its last four games against St. Louis...Recchi has posted four goals and eight points in seven games since the Thrashers picked him up off waivers from Pittsburgh.
