NHL Game Summary - Boston at Pittsburgh

(Sunday, December 23rd)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Boston 2

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Gary Roberts scored two goals and added an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Boston Bruins, 4-2, at Mellon Arena.

Georges Laraque chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Ty Conklin made 28 saves for the Penguins, who have won three of their last five games. Evgeni Malkin also scored for Pittsburgh.

P.J. Axelsson and Petteri Nokelainen tallied for Boston, which has dropped four straight and five of its last six. Alex Auld stopped 21 shots in defeat

With the Penguins holding a 3-1 lead after two periods, Pittsburgh played a good defensive third stanza, limiting the Bruins quality scoring chances. However, with Auld out of the net in favor of the extra attacker in the closing minutes, Nokelainen's goal with 54 seconds left made it a 3-2 game. Boston tried in vain to get the equalizer, but were unable to sustain any offensive pressure and Roberts scored into the empty net with 10 seconds left to account for the 4-2 final score.

Boston struck first 3:48 into the opening period when Axelsson stuffed a rebound past Conklin off a point shot from Zdeno Chara to give the Bruins the early lead.

Roberts tied the game at 1-1 2:16 into the second frame when he beat Auld with a quick wrist shot on the doorstep on a nice feed from Laraque from behind the net.

Pittsburgh claimed the lead with just under 7:00 left in the second when the Penguins struck for two quick goals. First it was Malkin tallying on the power play. With Chuck Kobasew in the box serving a charging minor, Malkin blasted a one timer from the right circle on a pass from Jordan Staal to make it a 2-1 game.

Then, 30 seconds later, Roberts skated down the left side and from the circle made a cross ice pass to Laraque, who was skating to the net and redirected the puck past Auld to give the Pens a two-goal advantage.

"We haven't played well at home," Roberts said of the Penguins struggles on home ice. "We got great fans here who support us. They have been really good for us. We haven't put on a good show this season thus far. Hopefully that's the start of some good home games to end the rest of season."
