NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Colorado
(Friday, December 21st)
Final Score: Colorado 4, NY Rangers 3 (OT)
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Wojtek Wolski's goal just 1:16 into overtime sent the Colorado Avalanche over the New York Rangers, 4-3, at Pepsi Center.
The scoring chance came off a Rangers' turnover deep in their own end, and after Jeff Finger ripped a shot toward the net, it trickled between the pads of New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist before Wolski was able to tip it home.
"I thought it was going in, but I just wanted to put a stick on it," said Wolski. "I didn't want to take a chance. It was a great play by Finger."
Milan Hejduk had a pair of goals, Marek Svatos also scored and Wolski added an assist for the Avs, who have won four of their last five games. Peter Budaj made 20 saves in the victory, as Colorado improved to 14-3-0 on its home ice.
Brendan Shanahan, Michal Rozsival and Marc Staal all scored, and Lundqvist turned aside 33 shots for the Rangers, who have dropped four of five. Martin Straka and Scott Gomez each had a pair of assists for the Blueshirts, who have lost seven straight versus Colorado.
"We had the lead, and we were lucky to have the lead after the first," said Lundqvist. "They came out flying in the first and then we got better. This is tough. We need the points right now. We worked hard but they were better than us. At the same time, we had our chances at the end of the game and just couldn't make it work out."
The meeting was the first between these two teams since December 18, 2005, a 2-1 Avalanche victory at Madison Square Garden. The Avs and Rangers last met in Colorado on November 20, 2003, a 4-3 Avalanche win.
Shanahan notched a power-play goal to put the Rangers on top in the first period, as his shot deflected off traffic in front and snuck over the goal line at 13:25.
Hedjuk answered with his own score on the man-advantage just 3:22 into the second period, and a little more than four minutes later put the Avs up 2-1 when he drilled a one-timer from Paul Stastny over top of a diving of Lundqvist.
Rozsival tied it just 26 seconds later on a hard slap shot that sailed over the left shoulder of Budaj, making it 2-2.
Then, 1:05 after the tying goal, Staal's wrist shot snuck through traffic and found room under the left arm of Budaj, putting the Blueshirts up 3-2 heading to the third.
Colorado once again pulled even after Jaroslav Hlinka's shot fluttered off the stick of Lundqvist and Svatos was able to poke the rebound over the fallen netminder at 8:23 of the third.
Colorado captain Joe Sakic missed his 11th straight game with a groin injury. The club was also missing left wing Ryan Smyth and defenseman Jordan Leopold. Leopold is suffering from a cut on his leg, while Smyth is day-to-day with a stiff neck...The Rangers have not beaten Colorado since a 5-3 win on November 20, 2001. New York hasn't won in the Mile High City since December 31, 1998...Budaj is 4-0-1 in his last five games...Hejduk recorded his fourth multi-goal game of the season.
