NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Colorado
(Wednesday, January 30th)
Final Score: Colorado 6, Chicago 3
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Marek Svatos posted two goals and an assist to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, as both teams resumed play after the All-Star break at Pepsi Center.
Tyler Arnason registered a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game skid. Milan Hejduk had a goal and an assist, and Wojtek Wolski collected two assists. Eleven different players recorded a point in the game.
Jose Theodore, who was making his 11th straight start, allowed one goal on 11 shots before leaving after two periods with back spasms. Peter Budaj, making his first appearance since January 2nd, when he yielded three goals in a 5-2 loss to Phoenix, took over at the beginning of the third and stopped 2-of-4 shots.
Yanic Perreault scored two goals for the Blackhawks, who have dropped three in a row on the heels of a four-game win streak. Robert Lang also tallied, while Nikolai Khabibulin, who has not won since December 26, going 0-8-1 in that span, surrendered all six goals on 30 shots. Backup goaltender Patrick Lalime has won four of his last five outings.
Hejduk put the Avalanche on the board 9:13 into the contest, and Svatos, driving hard to the net, tallied 2:05 later when he poked the puck off the stick of Chicago's Adam Burish past a surprised Khabibulin.
Colorado extended its lead to 3-0 with 1:31 to play in the first. Ben Guite glided down the right wing, circled behind the cage and threw the puck out front, where Brad Richardson jammed it home.
Not long after Chicago successfully killed a penalty, Lang made it a 3-1 game at the 3:17 mark of the second, slipping the puck between the legs of Theodore.
Andrew Brunette then struck on the power play to give the Avalanche a 4-1 lead with eight minutes remaining, as his one-timer from the high slot zipped past the glove of Khabibulin.
Arnason provided another insurance goal at 6:29 of the third. John-Michael Liles' shot from the point pin balled off bodies in front right to Arnason, who was camped out to the left of Khabibulin. Arnason kicked the puck to his stick and tapped it into the net.
Svatos' second goal of the night with 6:04 remaining made it 6-1, but Perreault added two goals in the last three minutes to make the score more respectable. First, his quick wrister from the bottom of the right circle beat Budaj through the five-hole, and later, a turnaround slap shot from practically the same spot beat Budaj high on the short side.
