NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Edmonton

(Saturday, December 15th)

Final Score: Edmonton 2, Vancouver 1 (SO)

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Fernando Pisani scored the deciding goal in the shootout, as the Edmonton Oilers edged the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1, at Rexall Place.

After an overtime session when each team registered three shots, the game was decided in a shootout. Vancouver's Trevor Linden and Edmonton's Sam Gagner were stopped in the first round, but Ryan Kesler snapped a wrister past the stick of Oilers goaltender Mathieu Garon in round two.

Ales Hemsky failed to score, giving Taylor Pyatt an opportunity to win the game for Vancouver, but Garon flashed the leather, making a beautiful glove save. Shawn Horcoff beat Curtis Sanford to extend the segment to a fourth round. Garon made another glove save on Alexandre Burrows and Pisani slid a backhander through the legs of Sanford to earn the extra point for Edmonton.

Horcoff scored in regulation for Edmonton, which has reeled off three straight wins, all coming via the shootout. Garon finished the game with 29 saves.

Mattias Ohlund scored a historic goal for the Canucks, who completed a four- game road trip with a 1-2-1 mark. Ohlund's marker was the 84th of his career, breaking the Canucks franchise record for goals by a defenseman, which was previously held by Jyrki Lumme. Sanford stopped 25 shots.

Edmonton improved its shootout record to 10-1, while Vancouver fell to 0-4 this season.

The contest remained scoreless until there was 3:29 remaining in the third period when Horcoff lit the lamp. Hemsky maneuvered around the offensive zone, circled behind Sanford and fed Horcoff at the left circle, who one-timed the puck over the fallen netminder.

Ohlund knotted the game 2:07 later. There was a wild scramble in front of Garon. Alexander Edler dished to the right circle for Daniel Sedin, whose shot hit Henrik Sedin in the slot. Ohlund, sneaking in from the left point, pounced on the loose disc and jammed it behind Garon.
