NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Colorado

(Saturday, December 15th)

Final Score: Colorado 3, Nashville 1

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Marek Svatos scored the game-winning goal late in the second period and Ryan Smyth added a pair of assists as Colorado edged Nashville, 3-1, at Pepsi Center.

Paul Stastny and Jordan Leopold also hit the net for the Avalanche, winners in four of five including both ends of their home-and-home series with Nashville.

Peter Budaj made 31 stops and was credited with an assist in the victory.

"The puck was hitting me. The defense was great, they were clearing the pucks well," Budaj noted.

Martin Gelinas provided the lone goal for the Predators, who have lost three straight and five of their last six.

Chris Mason allowed all three goals on only 16 shots in the loss.

Following a scoreless first period which saw Nashville hold a 17-5 shot advantage, the Avs took a 1-0 lead on Stastny's 14th goal of the season, a one-timer from the slot 4:06 into the second.

Svatos made it 2-0 for Colorado with 5:10 left in the period, by knocking home the rebound of Smyth's initial chance, but Gelinas buried a rebound from just outside the crease 53 seconds later.

The Avs assumed a 3-1 edge midway through the third on a delayed penalty call, as Leopold's right point shot hit a body in front and got past Mason.

"That one had eyes," Leopold admitted. "I'm glad I found a way to get it in. It was ugly, but we'll take it."

Colorado tightened up defensively in the late going, and skated off with their second win in as many games over the Preds, following a 2-1 triumph in Nashville on Thursday.

"No one's going to feel sorry for us," Predators forward Scott Nichol said. "We are doing the little things right. Sooner or later the pucks will go in, and when they do, watch out. This is an adjustment for us."
