San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Paul Gaustad scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres used a four-goal second period to down the San Jose Sharks, 7-1, at HP Pavilion.
Tim Connolly scored a short-handed goal and added an assist while Derek Roy also tallied a goal and a helper for the Sabres, who avoided losing their third straight contest.

Evgeni Nabokov started between the pipes and allowed four goals on 25 shots for the Sharks, who had a four-game win streak snapped. Nabokov was replaced in the crease by Dimitri Patzold at the start of the third period and he ended with six saves on nine shots.
With 5:59 left in the opening period, San Jose went up 1-0 on Sandis Ozolinsh's second goal of the season. From just inside the blueline, Ozolinsh fluttered a wrist shot that deflected off a skate in front and over the glove of Miller.
It was all Buffalo the remainder of the contest.
Ales Kotalik's tally 4:06 into the second stanza tied the game at 1-1. Roy raced into San Jose's zone up the left wing and slid a pass across to Kotalik, who redirected the puck past a sliding Nabokov.
The Sabres went up 2-1 at 7:33 of the second on a short-handed goal by Connolly. Ozolinsh lost his balance on a break out in his own end and the puck trickled away from him. An alert Connolly quickly pounced on the disc and skated in on goal, lifting a backhander into the top left corner of the net.
At 12:26 of the second, Michael Ryan took a pass from Adam Mair in front and tapped the puck over the goal line to give Buffalo a two-goal lead.
Gaustad's power-play goal with 2:46 left in the second made it 4-1. Campbell cranked a slap shot from the point and from the left side of the net, Gaustad redirected the disc into the net.
Roy's 10th goal of the season at 12:32 of the third gave the Sabres a four- goal advantage while Gaustad's second goal of the game at 16:03 made it 6-1. A late power-play goal by Thomas Vanek completed the rout.
