NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Phoenix

(Monday, January 21st)

Final Score: Phoenix 6, Buffalo 2

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Shane Doan recorded a goal and an assist, leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Jobing.com Arena.

Peter Mueller also posted a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who snapped a two-game skid. Daniel Winnik, Niko Kapanen, Derek Morris and Ed Jovanovski also scored, while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 19-of-21 shots.

Paul Gaustad and Drew Stafford tallied for the Sabres, who have lost a franchise record eight straight games on the road. Jocelyn Thibault, making only his sixth start of the season, yielded six goals on 33 shots for Buffalo, which hasn't posted a victory on the road since December 22 in Philadelphia.

In the middle stanza, with the game locked at one, Phoenix exploded for three goals in a 5:33 span to build a healthy 4-1 lead.

While killing a penalty, Buffalo's Toni Lydman tried to ice the puck, but the clearing attempt from behind his own net hit Kapanen in the right circle. Kapanen settled the puck down and snapped a wrister that glanced off the glove of Thibault and trickled across the goal line at 1:57.

Doan lit the lamp at 5:08 when he cut across the left circle to the slot and fired a wrister that rattled off the near post.

Morris capped the scoring barrage with a long-range slapper from the right point that squeezed between the right pad and arm of Thibault at 7:30.

Buffalo trimmed the margin to 4-2 on Stafford's tap-in at 1:51 of the third. Mueller, however, restored a three-goal cushion with 2:57 remaining and Jovanovski added a power-play goal 65 seconds later to complete the offense.

It didn't take the Coyotes long to score as Winnik lit the lamp 54 seconds into the contest.

Buffalo tied the game with 9:06 remaining in the first. Off a faceoff win, Gaustad drove to the front of the net and knocked in a rebound behind Bryzgalov.
