NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Tampa Bay

(Thursday, December 6th)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 2, Carolina 1

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Johan Holmqvist made 23 saves, many of them acrobatic, as he helped Tampa Bay edge Carolina, 2-1, at St. Pete Times Forum.

Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis tallied for the Lightning, who have won three in a row.

Cory Stillman lit the lamp for the Hurricanes, who have lost four of their last six games.

Cam Ward made 30 stops in defeat.

Lecavalier's blast from the right circle with four minutes left in the second period put the Bolts up 1-0. The score came just after a potential first goal more than a minute before was swept off the goal line by Ray Whitney after it snuck behind Ward.

With Carolina on the power play, Stillman was robbed on back-to-back shots in the final two minutes by Holmqvist's pad at the right post, and the nimble netminder came across the crease to stone Stillman again with a minute to go.

Tampa went up 2-0 on another man-advantage goal when St. Louis let fly from the point and the shot nicked the left post and veered in with 7:15 left in regulation.

"Obviously it was a good feeling when he scored the second goal," Holmqvist said. "We did it on the power play, great traffic in front and it was a big goal for us."

Holmqvist confounded Stillman once more while the 'Canes skated with the extra attacker in the final minute, as his desperation dive caused Stillman's shot from the right side of the crease bounce off his helmet.

"It's frustrating when you don't score, especially in a close game," Stillman said of his bad luck. "When you get that opportunity, you need to bear down."

The Carolina forward got his revenge as he deflected David Tanabe's point shot for a goal with 14 seconds remaining to ruin the shutout.

"If the game would have been 1-0, I would've been very disappointed, but the guys battled hard in front," Holmqvist added. "I didn't really care as long as we win the game."

Game Notes

Tampa has won three of the four meetings this season, and eight of the last 12 matchups...Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour picked up an assist on Stillman's goal, his first point in three games.
