NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Atlanta
(Sunday, January 20th)
Final Score: Edmonton 4, Atlanta 2
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Robert Nilsson posted a goal and an assist, as the Edmonton Oilers doubled up the Atlanta Thrashers, 4-2, at Philips Arena.
Dustin Penner, Sam Gagner and Tom Gilbert also scored for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game winless streak. Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky and Steve Staios each collected two assists, while Dwayne Roloson stopped 29-of-31 shots to earn his eighth win of the season and first since December 13th.
"Its a huge win for us," said Roloson. "We're battling to get back in the playoff picture and unfortunately we didn't play as well as we needed to (Friday) in Carolina to get a win. Tonight we came out and played a full team game to get a win."
Vyacheslav Kozlov and Marian Hossa tallied for the Thrashers, who have dropped three straight and remain one point behind idle Carolina for first place in the Southeast Division. Eric Perrin had two helpers and Kari Lehtonen allowed four goals on 24 shots.
"We obviously needed to bounce back with a win and we didn't get it," said Atlanta coach Don Waddell. "We made two huge mistakes that cost us goals."
Edmonton broke a scoreless tie with a power-play goal at the 6:38 mark of the second. Hemsky dished to Penner at the right circle, where Penner's wrist shot beat Lehtonen low to the stick side.
Atlanta answered back with 5:11 remaining. Perrin passed the puck from behind the cage to Kozlov, perched at the bottom of the left circle, and his wrister found room on the short side.
The Oilers regained the lead 65 seconds later when Gagner fired the puck past the glove of Lehtonen.
Gilbert fired a wrister from the right circle that beat Lehtonen high on the stick side at 4:20 of the third. Nilsson's marker with 6:03 remaining gave the Oilers a 4-1 lead.
Hossa tipped in a rebound to make it a 4-2 game with 1:20 left, but it wasn't enough for Atlanta.
