NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh
(Friday, January 18th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Pittsburgh 0
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Johan Holmqvist stopped all 27 shots he faced, helping the Tampa Bay Lightning shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-0, at the Igloo.
Andre Roy had a goal and two assists, and Chris Gratton had a goal and assist for Tampa Bay, which has won three of five. Holmqvist notched his first shutout this season, and second of his career, as the Lightning won their seventh straight in Pittsburgh.
The Penguins were dealt a shot of bad luck early, as captain Sidney Crosby left in the first period with a high right ankle sprain. He didn't return, and will be re-evaluated Saturday. Ty Conklin stopped 31-of-34 shots in the loss.
Kyle Wanvig kicked the scoring off just 4:34 into the game, knocking in a pass from Roy at the top of the crease. It was just his sixth career goal, and first since the 2005-06 season, when he played for Minnesota.
A little more than six minutes later, Gratton received a pass from Roy, kicked the puck off his skate, and backhanded a shot five-hole past Conklin, giving the Lightning a 2-0 lead.
"We came out with pretty good energy in the first," Roy said. "I feel everybody feels good for everybody's mental morale, I guess. (We've) got to come out at Ottawa (Saturday) and play the same way we did."
In between the scores, Crosby was injured. As he skated toward the Tampa Bay net on a rush, Tampa Bay's Paul Ranger pulled Crosby down from behind. Crosby slid on the ice, and hit the end boards feet-first. He grabbed for his right leg, and moments later limped off the ice, helped by team trainers.
"Obviously it is a huge loss," Pittsburgh head coach Michel Therrien said. "There is no team that can deal with losing the best player in the league. He is the heart and he is our leader. We are going to face adversity and we are going to have to battle through it."
Without Crosby, Pittsburgh still generated some decent scoring chances, and had 17 shots on goal between the second and third periods. However, Holmqvist stopped them all.
Just 5:32 into the third period, Roy was credited on a shot that caromed off several players in the slot, and found its way past Conklin.
The teams were a combined 0-for-8 on the power play...Despite the loss, Pittsburgh stayed in a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division with New Jersey, which lost to Florida on Friday. They are both two points ahead of idle Philadelphia...This was the first time Tampa Bay has shut out an opponent this season.
