NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Detroit
(Saturday, December 1st)
Final Score: Detroit 3, Phoenix 2
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Dan Cleary's goal early in the third period was the difference, as Detroit scored twice in the final 20 minutes to slip past Phoenix, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.
Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings, winners in three straight games.
Chris Osgood made 24 saves to register his third straight win and improve to 13-1-1 on the year.
Daniel Winnik and Fredrik Sjostrom tallied for the Coyotes, losers of three in a row.
Ilya Bryzgalov allowed three goals on 39 shots in the loss. After winning his first four starts after coming over from Anaheim, the Russian netminder has dropped three consecutive games.
Zetterberg's tally just 39 seconds into the third tied the game, 2-2. On the play, Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski broke in and shot from 20 feet. The puck was never clearly frozen by Bryzgalov, and after a scramble in front, the super Swede found it to the right of the crease and chipped the disc into the cage.
"It was just one of those things, fortunate for them and unfortunate for us," Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky said about the tally. "It took a funny bounce."
Cleary then unleashed a bullet from the left circle and under the crossbar for a 3-2 Detroit lead and power-play goal at 5:04. Jiri Hudler set up the blast with a perfect pass from along the goal line.
Osgood made a flashy right-pad stop on a deflected shot by Sjostrom with 3 1/2 minutes to play, pinning the puck against his body after it kicked off the near post.
Osgood then remained solid down the stretch as the Red Wings gained their NHL- best 18th victory of the season.
"It'll be a win when you look at the papers in the morning, but it wasn't a very pretty effort on our part," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock.
Detroit struck first on the power play. Datsyuk received a pass in the right circle from Zetterberg and his centering feed deflected off bodies in front and through Bryzgalov for a 1-0 lead at 7:46.
Phoenix tied the score at 5:17 of the second as Winnik had all day to put the puck over a fallen Osgood from the left side of the crease.
The visitors took a 2-1 lead with 5:40 remaining when a right-point shot by Nick Boynton bounced off the back boards and caromed in front, where Sjostrom flipped it home from the top of the left circle.
Detroit has won the last six meetings overall, and the last four in the Motor City...The Red Wings finished 2-of-4 with the extra man, while the Coyotes went scoreless in three chances.
