NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Columbus
(Tuesday, January 15th)
Final Score: Columbus 3, Vancouver 2
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Nikolai Zherdev had a goal and an assist as Columbus edged Vancouver, 3-2, winning its sixth consecutive game on home ice to set a new franchise record.
Ron Hainsey and Jason Chimera also scored, and Pascal Leclaire made 25 saves for Columbus, which has not lost at Nationwide Arena since a 3-1 defeat to the Nashville Predators on December 23. The Blue Jackets have also won three straight games overall.
Kris Beech and Daniel Sedin tallied for Vancouver, which has lost three of its last four games. Roberto Luongo turned aside 18 shots in the contest.
Columbus jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a couple of power-play goals. The first was courtesy of Hainsey, who took a feed from Zherdev while stationed between the circles and ripped the puck under Luongo's glove at 2:07.
Zherdev then lit the lamp, sending a shot through the five-hole of Luongo at 6:50.
Beech cut it to 2-1 at 16:53, notching a goal against his former teammates when he collected a backhand pass from Byron Ritchie, and while charging the net, slid the disc between the pads of Leclaire.
Vancouver tied it with 6:42 remaining in the second, as Daniel Sedin stationed himself in front of the crease and easily tapped Henrik Sedin's feed into a wide-open net.
The Jackets went back on top with 3:17 left in the stanza, though, as Chimera stayed in stride toward the net and managed to redirect the puck under the blocker of Luongo.
Leclaire stymied Vancouver the rest of the way, stopping a Henrik Sedin slapshot from the wing early in the third before stonewalling a Markus Naslund backhand attempt a little more than a minute later.
Vancouver got some strong pressure after pulling Luongo with under a minute left, but with 3.5 seconds to play, Leclaire was able to glove a final shot to ice the victory.
