NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Vancouver
(Tuesday, November 27th)
Final Score: Vancouver 4, Anaheim 0
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo made 26 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Vancouver Canucks roughed up the Anaheim Ducks, 4-0, at General Motors Place.
Ryan Kesler scored twice while Matt Cooke and Markus Naslund each added a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have won three of their last four, and five of seven overall.
The shutout was the second in a row for Luongo, as he made 27 saves in a 2-0 win against Chicago on Sunday.
"They played a really strong first period, and obviously the difference was Roberto," said Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault. "We just talked about making better plays with the puck especially at their line and just better overall decisions and I think we picked up our level of intensity to another level."
Jean-Sebastien Giguere let in all four goals on 27 shots for the Ducks, who have dropped three of their last four games. Jonas Hiller came on in relief of Giguere early in the third period and stopped all six shots he faced.
"We started well but that was the only period we played," said Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle. "You can't get away playing 20 minutes of hockey in the NHL. We thought we had a decent start, we thought we'd be able to carry our work ethic and our strong one-on-one battles with the puck and that and create more ourselves, at least give ourselves a chance. We ran into penalty problems, took undisciplined penalties and basically took ourselves out of the game and got frustrated."
The game marked the first time that Anaheim forward Todd Bertuzzi has played in Vancouver since the Canucks traded him in June of 2006.
The first period was a scoreless affair, as Anaheim had 15 shots in the first period while Vancouver only totaled five.
In the second period, Vancouver scored three times to take control of the game.
A dump in the left corner was picked up by Daniel Sedin, who dished the puck back to Naslund for a one-timer that beat Giguere just 3:20 in.
Skating on a 5-on-3 power play, Naslund blasted a one-timer on net that was slowed down, but Kesler whacked it in from down low with 7:22 left in the period.
The last goal came with 3:27 remaining in the frame as Alexandre Edler blasted a one-timer from the left point that Cooke deflected past Giguere.
Kesler got his second goal of the game 5:05 into the third. Cooke had the puck along the right boards in the neutral zone and hit Kesler in stride at the Anaheim blueline. Kesler split the defensemen and snapped a wrister into the left corner of the net for his seventh goal of the year.
Vancouver hosts Columbus on Thursday...Anaheim plays in Calgary on Thursday...Henrik Sedin, who was awarded a penalty shot with 49.4 seconds left in the game, which he missed, and Mattias Ohlund each had two assists for Vancouver...Luongo has 18 shutouts in his career...Vancouver finished the game 2-for-10 on the power play while Anaheim went just 0-for-1.
