NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at New Jersey
(Friday, November 16th)
Final Score: NY Islanders 1, New Jersey 0
Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Rick DiPietro stole the spotlight from Martin Brodeur, recording his second shutout of the season as the New York Islanders edged New Jersey, 1-0, denying the Devils goaltender his 500th career victory in his third straight attempt.
Josef Vasicek had the lone tally, a short-handed one, for the Islanders, who had dropped the first two contests of a four-game road trip, but have won five of their last seven overall.
DiPietro, who finished with 26 saves, notched his 13th career shutout as the Isles improved to 3-0 against the Devils in the 2007-08 campaign.
Brodeur also failed in a bid to pick up No. 500 last Saturday in a 2-1 loss to the Isles, then was back between the pipes in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers. He is looking to become just the second goaltender in NHL history to reach the plateau, joining Patrick Roy, who compiled 551 regular season wins to go along with 151 postseason victories.
The milestone isn't the only concern for Brodeur, who made 25 saves in the contest. He was beaten for the fourth time in his last five starts behind an inconsistent Devils squad. New Jersey was blanked for the fifth time this season after being shut out six times all of last year, and has dropped five of its last seven games overall, scoring just 11 goals in that span.
Brodeur and DiPietro each had seven saves apiece in the first period, but New York grabbed the lead 5:25 into the middle stanza.
With left winger Chris Simon off for tripping, Vasicek gained possession when New Jersey defenseman Mike Mottau lost his footing and coughed up the puck just a few strides from Brodeur. The Isles' center came in alone, skidded to a stop and faked several times to deceive Brodeur before chipping the puck over his right shoulder.
DiPietro stymied the Devils the rest of the way, coming up with a pair of huge stops to close out the second period before turning aside 10 shots in the third.
New Jersey defenseman Paul Martin was scratched with a lower body injury...This is the first time the Islanders have played on consecutive nights since the opening week of the season...DiPietro's other shutout this season came in a 4-0 victory over Tampa Bay on November 1...Brodeur is 38-19-2 against the Islanders in his career, including four ties...The Islanders have won five of the last seven road games against the Devils, but this was their first visit to the new Prudential Center.
