NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Philadelphia

(Saturday, November 10th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 5, Pittsburgh 2

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Kimmo Timonen notched a goal and three assists, Daniel Briere tallied and had two helpers and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-2, at the Wachovia Center.

Mike Knuble, Joffrey Lupul and Scott Hartnell also lit the lamp, Mike Richards had three assists and Martin Biron made 29 saves for the Flyers, who remain the NHL's only unbeaten team at home this season with a 5-0 mark. It's also the first time they've achieved the feat since the 1986-87 squad won the first eight of the season on home ice.

Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist, Sergei Gonchar also scored and Sidney Crosby had an assist to extend his point streak to a career-high 16 games for Pittsburgh. Crosby has nine goals and 16 assists during the run since being held off the scoresheet in a season-opening loss at Carolina.

Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 25 saves for the Pens, who have dropped three straight and five of their last six games.

The Flyers opened the scoring with a power-play tally just 1:31 into the contest. Briere was the catalyst, as he sent a pass from behind the net to Timonen, who knocked the puck off the back of Fleury and watched it trickle over the goal line.

Knuble's tally, which sparked another scrum in the crease, then made it 2-0 at 7:51. Briere again helped to get the shot on net, but had his chance deflect to Knuble, who tried to knock it into a wide open cage from off the left side. The disc deflected off the skate of Fleury, however, and was nearly cleared out of the crease by Gonchar before Knuble managed to poke it home.

Lupul helped the orange-and-black up the lead to 3-0 when he deflected a slap shot from the point by Richards, with the team again skating on the man- advantage 5:40 into the second period.

The Pens, however, cut it to 3-1 on the power play when Crosby set up Ray Whitney from along the right boards, then watched him carry the puck down through the bottom of the left circle and send a cross-ice pass to Malkin, who rammed it into the net at 8:39.

Pittsburgh then pulled within one with just 0.2 seconds left in the stanza when Gonchar wristed a shot from just inside the blueline that snuck past a screened Biron on the low left side.

Briere gave Philadelphia some breathing room when he snapped home a rebound shot through the legs of Fleury with 12:06 remaining in the contest, while Hartnell recorded his first goal as a Flyer when he added an empty-net tally with 51 seconds left.

Game Notes

The Flyers were coming off their longest road swing of the season, having gone 3-5-0...Flyers forward Simon Gagne missed his second straight game due to a reoccurrence of his symptoms of dizziness stemming from a collision with Pittsburgh's Gary Roberts on Wednesday...Biron is 7-0-1 with two ties in his last 10 games versus the Penguins...Crosby has failed to score in five straight games versus the Flyers even though he has 32 points in 18 career games against them...Malkin has a 10-game point streak (4g, 11a).
