Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Dan Ellis made 20 saves for the Nashville Predators in a 3-0 shutout victory over the Atlanta Thrashers at Sommet Center.
Jordin Tootoo had a two-point night with a goal and an assist, while David Legwand assisted on a pair of goals for the Predators. Jerred Smithson and Scott Nichol also scored for the Predators, who halted a six-game losing streak with the victory.
Ellis earned his first-career shutout in only his second-career start.
Johan Hedberg stopped 31 shots for the Thrashers, who have gone 2-2-0 since management fired Bob Hartley.
Nashville struck first in the opening stanza. With the Predators cycling down low, Legwand maintained possession along the far wall, turned and fired the puck on goal. Smithson, charging the net, tipped the puck, causing it to trickle behind Hedberg. Smithson stayed with the play and tapped the puck in, snapping the Predators goal-less streak of 150:27. Nashville had not scored since the second period of its 3-1 loss to Anaheim on October 17th.
Tootoo's second goal of the season gave Nashville a 2-0 lead with 14:20 left in the second period. An excellent breakout pass by Jed Ortmeyer from the defensive zone led to the tally.
In the third period, Nashville tightened up defensively; Atlanta didn't register a shot until there was just over seven minutes remaining and finished with three in the frame.
Nichol's empty-net goal put the game away for Nashville.
