NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Carolina

(Monday, October 22nd)

Final Score: Carolina 3, Vancouver 1

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Ray Whitney had a goal and an assist to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at RBC Center.

Cory Stillman and Chad LaRose also scored while Cam Ward finished with 19 saves for the Hurricanes, who avoided losing their third straight game.

Brendan Morrison tallied the lone goal and Roberto Luongo had 28 saves for the Canucks, who have three losses in their last four games.

Carolina dominated the first period, but Luongo was brilliant and stopped all 16 shots fired his way.

At 5:07 of the second, the Hurricanes were able to solve Luongo on Stillman's power-play goal. Whitney dished the puck to the top of the right circle to Stillman, who quickly one-timed the feed past Luongo.

The 'Canes increased their lead to 2-0 at 7:01 of the third on a breakaway goal by LaRose. From his own end, Rod Brind'Amour fired an outlet pass to LaRose, who split two Vancouver defensemen at the blue line, skated in all alone and ripped a snap shot into the top right corner of the net.

With 6:41 left in the third, Vancouver pulled within a goal on Morrison's fourth of the season. Brad Isbister circled behind the net with the disc and threw a pass out in front to Morrison, who flipped the puck just under the crossbar.

With about a minute to go the Canucks attempted to pull Luongo for the extra skater, but the player replacing him was well on the ice before the netminder got to the bench, resulting in a penalty for too many men.

After the Canucks gained possession on the following faceoff, Luongo headed to the bench. Vancouver's Mattias Ohlund though coughed up the puck at his own blue line and Whitney sealed Carolina's victory with an empty-net tally with just 33 seconds left.
