NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Anaheim
(Wednesday, November 7th)
Final Score: Phoenix 6, Anaheim 5 (OT)
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Shane Doan scored off a turnover with just 30.3 seconds left in overtime, as the Phoenix Coyotes snared a 6-5 win over the Anaheim Ducks in a wild one at the Honda Center.
Rookie Peter Mueller, entering the night with just one goal to his name, notched a hat trick for Phoenix, which improved to 5-1 on the road despite being under .500 for the year overall. Steven Reinprecht added a goal and two assists, while Alexander Auld finished with 22 saves.
Mathieu Schneider had a goal and two assists and Chris Pronger donated three helpers for the Ducks, who have lost two in a row and six of eight.
Ilja Bryzgalov yielded four goals on 18 shots before being replaced by Jean- Sebastien Giguere in the third period.
"Some nights you're just going to give up a lot of goals. The bottom line is, we can't beat ourselves up about that," Giguere said.
The high-flying game needed an extra session for an outcome to be decided, and it looked like it was heading to a shootout until Anaheim made a critical error. Two Duck players got tangled up with one another in their own zone, allowing Doan to gain control of the puck.
The right winger wasted little time, moving quickly into the circle before unleashing a hard slapshot that beat Giguere glove-side to end the game.
Mueller and Chris Kunitz exchanged first period goals to send the contest into the second stanza deadlocked at 1-1.
Todd Marchant broke that tie 4:10 into the second with a deflection goal. Phoenix, though, lashed back with three straight tallies to go up 4-2. Mueller got his second goal of the night at the 8:25 mark, and Reinprecht and Radim Vrbata lit the lamp moments later.
"It was a game where as soon as you scored they scored right back at you," said Mueller. "It was one of those games where we just had to push until the end."
Schneider brought the Ducks within one with 1:17 left in the second, and Andrew Miller knotted the contest at 4-4 early in the third. Schneider intentionally sent a slapshot against the back wall, and the puck caromed out front and into the pads of Auld before Miller punched it home.
Mueller got his hat trick less than three minutes later with a backhander from the slot.
Corey Perry countered with a slapshot that navigated through traffic just over a minute later, however, to tie the contest at 5-5 and induce overtime.
Phoenix will return home to host Dallas tomorrow before playing two straight in San Jose....The teams were a combined 2-for-13 on the power play...Giguere finished with nine saves.
