NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at NY Islanders
(Thursday, March 6th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 4, NY Islanders 1
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Sean Avery scored two goals, as the New York Rangers split a home-and-home with a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders earned a 4-3 shootout win Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
Brendan Shanahan and Scott Gomez also tallied for the Rangers, who have won eight of their previous 11 games (8-0-3). Nigel Dawes and Brandon Dubinsky each collected two assists, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26-of-27 shots to pick up the win.
"We talked about a 60-minute effort, and I thought we got a little tentative in the second period," Shanahan said. "We were determined after the second intermission to come out and have a more forceful third period. We had a textbook third period."
The Rangers moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
Sean Bergenheim had the only goal for the Islanders, who have dropped three of their past four contests. Wade Dubielewicz allowed three goals on 27 shots in defeat.
"Nobody's quitting, we're going to keep going and we'll see where everything falls after 82 games," said Islanders captain Bill Guerin.
The Islanders are five points behind Philadelphia, which beat Tampa Bay 3-2 on Thursday, for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Rangers stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
On a delayed penalty call against the Islanders, Shanahan broke in alone on Dubielewicz and ripped a shot between the goaltender's pads at the 1:29 mark.
Later in the frame, the Islanders got caught standing still and nobody picked up Avery in the slot, who redirected a pass from Marek Malik past the blocker of Dubielewicz with 6:35 remaining.
The Islanders trailed 2-1 after scoring the lone goal in the second period. Bergenheim fired a shot from the middle of the right circle that glanced off the shin guard of Malik and slid between the legs of Lundqvist with 9:26 left in the stanza.
Islanders defenseman Rob Davison was called for tripping in the late stages of the second and the Rangers power play carried over to the third period. Shortly after Davison vacated the penalty box, Marc Staal flubbed a shot from the left point that caromed off the leg of Gomez and in behind Dubielewicz 72 seconds into the frame.
Avery sealed the win with an empty-net marker in the final minute.
Gomez extended his point streak to five games (two goals, six assists)...The Islanders had won four of the first five meetings this season...The Islanders finished 0-for-5 on the power play. The Rangers went 0-for-3.
