NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Philadelphia

(Saturday, October 13th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 3, NY Islanders 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter and Sami Kapanen both scored second period goals to lead the Flyers past the New York Islanders, 3-1, in the home opener for Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center.

Captain Jason Smith sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, his first tally with Philadelphia, and Martin Biron had 29 saves for the Flyers, who returned to home ice after a three-game road trip in Western Canada where they won two games.

Josef Vasicek tallied the lone goal for the Islanders, who have lost three of their last four games. Rick DiPietro allowed two goals on 22 shots.

After a scoreless opening period, the Flyers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:37 of the second stanza with a power-play goal. Joffrey Lupul fired a wrist shot from the slot that was stopped, but Carter was camped out at the left side of the crease and he slid the rebound just over the goal line.

Philadelphia made it 2-0 at 8:46 of the second after Kapanen netted his first goal of the season. From the right half-wall, Scott Hartnell found Kapanen all alone in front and he fired the puck past DiPietro on his glove side.

The Islanders got back into the game with a short-handed goal at 2:38 of the third. Vasicek skated up the left wing and from the top of the circle cranked a slap shot that beat Biron on the near side.

Vasicek's goal gave the Isles life as they carried the play down the stretch. With about three minutes remaining in the contest, Vasicek's wrister from the slot was stopped and Biron made a sliding stick save on Miroslav Satan's rebound attempt in front.

New York pulled DiPietro for an extra attacker with about 1:15 left to play and the Isles had several chances to tie the game but Biron stood tall between the pipes. With time winding down, Bryan Berard ripped a shot from the left point that Smith blocked down low and then quickly fired the disc into the empty net with just six seconds left.
