Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mikael Tellqvist made 22 saves and Daniel Winnik's first NHL goal was the game-winner, as Phoenix edged St. Louis, 3-2, in the season-opener for both teams.
Keith Ballard and Mike York scored for the Coyotes, who sported the worst record in the Western Conference a year ago.
Keith Tkachuk picked up a goal and an assist while Brad Boyes scored once for the Blues and Manny Legace stopped 31-of-34 shots in the loss.
Ballard's goal with 7:45 to play in the second broke a scoreless tie and put the Coyotes up 1-0.
A pair of goals 12 seconds apart in the third by York at 7:18 and Winnik at 7:30 sent the home team to a 3-0 advantage.
However, Tkachuk poked home a second-chance rebound from the edge of the crease 28 seconds later to make it 3-1.
Paul Kariya picked up his first point as a Blue on the power play with 6:43 to play in regulation, as he slipped a cross-crease pass to Boyes for a re- direction to bring St. Louis within 3-2.
Phoenix was able to kill off Ed Jovanovski's high-sticking penalty with 1:06 remaining to escape with the win.
Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek suffered a broken hand in practice on Wednesday, and Ryan Caldwell was called up under emergency conditions to take the roster spot...The Blues signed veteran forward Mike Johnson on Thursday to add depth to their roster.
