NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Phoenix
(Monday, January 15th)
Final Score: Phoenix 5, St. Louis 4 (SO)
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Ladislav Nagy scored the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout, as the Phoenix Coyotes slipped by the St. Louis Blues, 5-4.
Ed Jovanovski scored twice and added an assist for the Coyotes, who have won eight of ten. Shane Doan picked up a pair of helpers as did Nagy, while Jeremy Roenick and Cyanic Peroral provided the other tallies.
Mikael Tellqvist stopped 22 shots in his first career start against St. Louis. He is 5-1-1, with one shutout in his last seven starts.
Petr Cajanek notched a pair of assists for the Blues, who had their three-game winning streak halted but still managed a point in the loss. Radek Dvorak had a goal and an assist, and Christian Backman, Dennis Wideman and Peter Sejna all scored in the contest.
Manny Legace made 39 saves in regulation but let up two goals in four shootout chances.
After Tellqvist stopped Sejna to open the fourth round, Nagy skated in and blew a wrister top-shelf over Legace to end the game. The Blues' Doug Weight and Doan each scored once in the shootout before the deciding score.
The Coyotes dominated the first period, outshooting the Blues, 19-7, and scoring the game's first two goals.
Just 2:59 in, it was 1-0, as Nagy broke into the Blues' zone down left wing and fed across to Peroral, whose one-timer sailed over Legace's shoulder. Roenick doubled the margin on the power-play at 14:19, tipping home Jovanovski's point shot.
St. Louis responded in the second with a pair of goals to tie. Backman tallied his third of the season at the 3:36 mark, breaking down the right wing, sidestepping two players and scoring top shelf on Tellqvist. Dvorak followed 2:18 later, beating a Coyotes defender in a foot race to a loose puck, and chipping a shot over Tellqvist as he was falling at full speed towards the crease.
However, with 50 seconds remaining, Doan dished to Jovanovski and his rising slap per from the point through traffic gave Phoenix a 3-2 advantage.
A tense third period saw three goals in the final 6:10, as the Blues erased a pair of one-goal deficits to send the game into overtime.
Wideman tallied at 13:50 with Georges Laraque in the box for boarding to forge a 3-3 tie, but in a poetic twist Jovanovski came back with his second of the game on a screamer from the point with 3:33 left in regulation as Wideman sat in the sin bin for boarding.
Sejna then tallied his first of the season for a 4-4 tie with 1:45 to go and both teams skating at even strength. Cajanek had dished down low to Sejna, and his backhander from a sharp angle on the right side trickled through Tellqvist.
The Coyotes have won five straight and six of seven against the Blues...23 of the Blues' 46 games have been decided by one goal...Peroral has 12 points (6G, 6A) in his last 11 games...Phoenix finished 1-2 on their three-game homestand...St. Louis has earned at least a point in seven of its last eight road games.
