NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Edmonton
(Wednesday, January 31st)
Final Score: Edmonton 5, Columbus 2
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Raffi Torres scored twice to help the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Rexall Place.
Fernando Pisani added a goal and two assists while Ryan Smyth had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won four of their last six contests.
Jussi Markkanen stopped 20 shots in the win for Edmonton, which is four points out of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
"It's great, it's obviously a monkey off my back," said Torres about the goals. "I haven't really been helping these guys out too much this year offensively so it definitely feels good to help these guys out."
David Vyborny and Fredrik Modin each had a goal for the Blue Jackets, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Ty Conklin stopped 32 shots in the loss.
"We came in here confident and we didn't execute the game plan that we wanted to," said Conklin. "I don't think it was too hard to tell who was the more urgent team the first five minutes."
The Oilers drew first blood in the contest and they did so on the power play. Ales Hemsky had the puck at the top of the left circle and sent it to Marc- Andre Bergeron at the top of the right circle. Bergeron let fly with a one- timer that Conklin stopped, but the rebound popped up and Smyth whacked it out of mid-air and into the net 3:31 into the first.
Markkanen only needed to make four saves in the first period to keep Columbus off the scoreboard.
Edmonton grabbed a 2-0 lead just 22 second into the second period when Torres redirected a Pisani shot between the pads of Conklin.
Columbus cut its deficit in half when Anson Carter fired a shot from the top of the left circle that Vyborny redirected between the pads of Markkanen for a power-play tally to make it a 2-1 game 6:03 into the second.
Edmonton got the goal back a little less than six minutes later when Smyth whacked at a rebound from the left side of the net that Conklin saved, but Petr Sykora was at the right side of the net and roofed the rebound to make it a 3-1 game.
The Blue Jackets made it a 3-2 game when Gilbert Brule and Modin worked a give-and-go with Modin one-timing a shot from the low slot between the pads of Markkanen just 46 seconds into the third.
Edmonton, though, scored two goals separated by 1:25 to take a 5-2 lead.
Jarret Stoll beat out an icing behind the right side of the net and centered it to Torres, who one-timed it into the left corner of the net 5:41 in.
A bit later, Marty Reasoner took the puck behind the Columbus net and from the right side sent the disc to the left side where Pisani was in position for the easy slam with 12:54 left.
