NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Boston
(Monday, January 29th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 6, Boston 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Petr Prucha had two goals and an assist to guide the New York Rangers over the Boston Bruins, 6-1, at TD Banknorth Garden.
Jed Ortmeyer donated three assists while Matt Cullen finished with a goal and two helpers for the Rangers, who have won two in a row. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced in victory.
"I thought Prucha was in on a lot of pucks tonight and I thought Ortmeyer was really good in terms of getting in and causing a lot of turnovers," Cullen said. "We were able to get a few to go in and they weren't necessarily pretty goals but I think they were created by speed and putting pressure on the puck."
Tim Thomas, meanwhile, yielded three goals on 15 shots before being pulled in favor of Hannu Toivonen, who gave up three goals on 14 chances. Patrice Bergeron had the lone goal for Boston, which has dropped seven of nine.
New York opened up the scoring 9:11 into the first period, as Prucha flicked the disc from behind the goal line into the slot, where it ricocheted off a defender's skate and in.
Bergeron tied the contest less than two minutes later with a power-play marker, but the Rangers responded with five unanswered goals to run away with the game.
The road team went ahead for good with 1:10 remaining in the opening stanza, when a charging Michal Rozsival took a feed from Prucha between the circles and slipped it past Thomas.
Prucha then struck again 6:41 into the second for his 12th goal of the year, which led to Boston making a change in net. Toivonen, though, gave up a shorthanded tally to Cullen moments later to make it 4-1. Ortmeyer set up the goal by fighting through defenders to corral the puck behind the net, then dished it in front for Cullen, who elevated a shot over the glove of Toivonen.
"I was totally surprised when I looked up and saw Hannu on the ice," Thomas said. "I was surprised and perplexed because it hadn't crossed my mind at all. I felt bad for Hannu."
The team continued to produce even when shorthanded, as Brendan Shanahan drew a penalty shot with his team down a man just over six minutes into the final session. He capitalized, roofing a backhander over a fallen Toivonen.
Just 1:13 later, Michael Nylander steamrolled in on goal and tucked the puck into the cage before being drilled into the netminder to cap the scoring .
