NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Buffalo
(Saturday, January 13th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Buffalo 2
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Brad Richards scored the game-winning goal in the final frame to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena.
Vincent Lecavalier scored a goal to extend his point streak to six games while Martin St. Louis notched an assist to register at least a point in 10 straight games for Tampa Bay, which has won four straight.
The last time the Lightning won four consecutive games was last season. They also defeated Buffalo for the first time in the last seven meetings.
"We've got three big wins in a row and we haven't got four in a row (until now) this year," Richards said. "It's something we've got to start doing if we want to get in a solid spot to get in the playoffs. It's also a good confidence boost to get it in this building."
Marc Denis turned aside 32 shots in the victory for Tampa Bay.
Jason Pominville and Ales Kotalik scored for the Sabres, who have dropped two straight and four of their last six games.
Ryan Miller allowed three goals on 23 shots in the loss.
"We made some poor decisions with the puck," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff.
At 6:56 of the third, the Lightning broke a tie and took a 3-2 edge. From the slot, Paul Ranger made a nifty backhand pass into the right circle to Richards, who one-timed the feed past a sliding Miller.
Buffalo pulled Miller with around a minute remaining and had some chances late, but could not net the equalizer.
Tampa Bay grabbed a 1-0 lead at 10:05 of the first after Lecavalier scored a power-play goal. From the left side of the net, St. Louis fed the puck to the slot to Lecavalier, who quickly one-timed the feed into the top right corner of the net.
The Sabres evened the score at 1-1 after Jason Pominville tallied 4:06 into the second stanza. Jaroslav Spacek cranked a slap shot from the right point that Denis stopped, but Pominville was camped out in front and fired the rebound home.
Just 44 seconds later, Ales Kotalik raced into the Tampa Bay zone up the right wing and fired a wrister that beat Denis through his pads to put Buffalo in front, 2-1.
Dan Boyle's slap shot from the right point beat a screened Miller at 15:38 of the second to even the score at 2-2. The goal was Boyle's 10th of the season.
Tampa Bay's last victory over Buffalo came on March 18, 2003, a 3-1 triumph at the St. Pete Times Forum...St. Louis and Lecavalier were both named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team earlier on Saturday...The Lightning have scored a power-play goal in five of their last six games...Pominville is the fourth Sabre this season to hit the 20-goal mark.
