NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Edmonton
(Friday, January 12th)
Final Score: Minnesota 4, Edmonton 2
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Marian Gaborik scored two goals to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.
Brian Rolston and Keith Carney also tallied for Minnesota, which has won two straight games, both on the road. Manny Fernandez made 32 saves on the night, including several key stops while the Wild were shorthanded.
Shawn Horcoff and Petr Sykora scored for Edmonton, which had its modest two- game win streak ended. Dwayne Roloson stopped 23 shots in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, Horcoff got the second off to a great start for the home team with a goal 20 seconds in. However, Gaborik and Rolston responded within a 43 second span for a 2-1 Wild advantage.
Sykora got the Oilers even with a beautiful one-time shovel shot from the slot off a Nedved backhand feed for a 2-2 tie with 2:13 left in the period.
Minnesota grabbed a 3-2 lead at 9:56 of the third, when Carney's low wrister from the left point managed to deflect off an Oilers' skate and slip between Roloson's pads. It was the Minnesota defenseman's first goal in 40 games, and the eventual game-winner.
Edmonton threw 11 shots on net in the third and had half-a-dozen other quality chances to get a tying goal past Fernandez, but Gaborik ended the threat on an empty-netter with three seconds left.
