NHL Game Summary - Detroit at St. Louis
(Friday, January 26th)
Final Score: St. Louis 2, Detroit 1 (OT)
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Bill Guerin scored 1:09 into the overtime session, as the St. Louis Blues ended a long losing streak on their home ice to the Detroit Red Wings after a 2-1 win at Scottrade Center.
Detroit came into the game undefeated in its last 11 visits to St. Louis (10 wins and one tie), but Guerin's late heroics lifted the Blues to their fourth straight win overall.
Early in the extra frame, Doug Weight carried the puck into Detroit's zone up the right side before shoveling the puck on net. The dump hit off Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood and came out to Guerin, who was streaking down the left side all alone, and the forward put the disc over Osgood's right pad.
It was Guerin's second straight game-winner as he scored the lone goal in the Blues' 1-0 win over San Jose last Saturday. It was also his third straight game with a goal.
"It's not going to be a Picasso every night. We didn't play great for 40 minutes but we came back in the third and played real solid and just stuck with it," Guerin said. "We're going to have to do that some nights. You're not always going to win by two or three goals...sometimes its going to be 1-0, 2-1. It's going to be tight games in a lot of them from here on in."
Ryan Johnson also scored for the Blues and Manny Legace stopped 28 shots as St. Louis won on its home ice against Detroit for the first time since April, 2002.
Johan Franzen tallied and Osgood ended with 18 saves for the Red Wings, who have dropped three straight -- all on the road. Osgood also took a stick to the hand in the extra session and had X-rays after the game, but the club won't know more until it returns to Detroit.
"We would have loved to have scored some more goals, but we were a little snake-bit late," said Osgood. "We're not happy with a point, we think we had opportunities to win the game."
Both regulation goals came in the second period.
After the scoreless first, the Blues grabbed the game's first lead. Jamal Mayers set the goal up as he put a backhander on net from the slot that Osgood turned aside. Johnson gained the rebound, though, and put the puck past Osgood's glove from the left side at the 8:03 mark.
The lead was short-lived as Detroit evened things up less than two minutes later, as Franzen weaved between three Blues players before chipping a bouncing puck past Legace's stick side for his sixth tally of the season.
The Red Wings thought they had grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the first on a deflection by Tomas Holmstrom, but the goal was immediately waived off due to Holmstrom's high-stick.
