NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at San Jose
(Saturday, January 20th)
Final Score: St. Louis 1, San Jose 0
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Manny Legace made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season as the St. Louis Blues headed into the All-Star break with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion.
Bill Guerin netted the lone goal of the game with Martin Rucinsky getting an assist for the Blues, who have won three straight and six of their last seven games. They also moved to 21-5 all-time at San Jose.
"It's just one of those anomalies," Guerin said. "Some teams have good luck and good success in certain buildings. You can't explain it."
Evgeni Nabokov made 12 saves for the Sharks, who had a four-game winning streak stopped.
St. Louis has a 19-21-8 record while San Jose holds a 32-16 mark at the break.
"We don't have a thing to work on over the break because it's mandatory and we don't practice until next Thursday," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "There's not really anything we can work on. It's rest time."
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the first period with San Jose putting 13 shots on net and St. Louis just six.
It appeared the teams were going to head into the third period scoreless, but Guerin lit the lamp when he brought the puck behind the net and from the right side lifted a backhander that went off the back of Nabokov's left leg and into the net with just 1:24 left in the second to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead.
Legace was again busy in the second period as he made 11 saves to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard.
San Jose tried desperately to net the equalizer in the third and pulled Nabokov with over a minute to play, but were unable to get any past Legace and the Blues held on for the win.
