NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Carolina

(Saturday, January 6th)

Final Score: Carolina 4, NY Islanders 2

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Erik Cole fanned on a first period penalty shot but responded with two second period goals to lead the Carolina Hurricanes over the New York Islanders, 4-2.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist while Cory Stillman and Ray Whitney each finished with two helpers for the Hurricanes, who put the breaks on a three-game skid.

Eric Staal broke a nine-game scoring drought while Cam Ward made 33 saves for Carolina.

Trent Hunter and Miroslav Satan each scored for the slumping Islanders, who have dropped six in a row. Rick DiPietro ended with 23 saves and was whistled for a key unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the second period that led to a Hurricanes goal.

After Cole's penalty shot miss, it looked as if both teams would go into the first intermission scoreless. However, with just .7 seconds left on the clock, Williams slipped the puck past an out-of-position DiPietro to put Carolina in front.

The Hurricanes were back at it 37 seconds into the second stanza on Cole's first goal of the game.

New York managed to get on the scoreboard at the 2:05 mark of the second. Mike Sillinger redirected Freddy Meyer's shot from the point on net. The puck slipped through Ward's pads and Hunter was there to stuff it home.

However, Bruno Gervais was whistled for holding and DiPietro was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving Carolina a full two-minute 5-on-3 power play. The Hurricanes took advantage as Cole tipped in Stillman's shot from the point to make it 3-1.

Staal's goal with 5:20 left in the third made it 4-1 before Satan redirected Viktor Kozlov's shot from the point past Ward to make it a two-goal game with 2:08 remaining. The Islanders, however, didn't threaten the rest of the way as Carolina held on for the win.
