Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Martin Brodeur made 23 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils past the New York Islanders, 3-2, at Nassau Coliseum in an Atlantic Division battle.
With the victory, New Jersey clinched its 10th straight playoff berth.
Patrik Elias returned to the lineup for New Jersey after missing the last five games with a groin injury and picked up an assist for the Devils, who have won two straight and remain in first place in the Atlantic Division.
New Jersey and Pittsburgh both have 98 points in the Atlantic but the Devils have 45 wins, one more than the Penguins.
Mike Dunham, who started in place of Rick DiPietro, allowed three goals on 32 shots and was pulled in the third period. DiPietro missed the contest due to headaches and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Wade Dubielewicz replaced Dunham and finished with four saves while Alexei Yashin and Jason Blake scored for the Islanders, who have lost two in a row and are in a three-way tie with Carolina and Toronto for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 84 points.
The Devils drew first blood after Zach Parise netted a power-play goal 6:11 into the contest. With the puck loose just outside the crease, a scrum ensued and after two swats, Parise pushed the disc over the goal line for his 30th goal of the campaign.
New Jersey went up 2-0 at 5:20 of the second stanza after Scott Gomez scored his 12th goal of the season. From the left boards, Elias threw a centering pass in front to a streaking Gomez, who one-timed the feed past Dunham.
A power-play goal by Yashin with 9:40 left in the second got the Isles on the board to make it a 2-1 game. From the top of the left circle, Yashin cranked a slap shot that beat a screened Brodeur.
The Devils made it a two-goal game at 4:44 of the third after David Clarkson scored on the power play. Jamie Langenbrunner's wrister from the slot was blocked in front by Dunham, but Clarkson controlled the rebound and fired the disc into the net to make it 3-1. Dunham was then pulled in favor of Dubielewicz.
New York pulled within a goal with 6:21 left in the third after Blake banged home a rebound in front to make it 3-2.
The Isles didn't have many chances down the stretch as New Jersey stepped up its defensive game and bottled New York up in the neutral zone.
New Jersey went 2-for-3 on the power play while New York scored once in two chances with the man advantage...Elias has 45 assists on the season...Randy Robitaille had two helpers in the loss for the Islanders.
