NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Anaheim

(Friday, March 23rd)

Final Score: Anaheim 3, Dallas 2 (OT)

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Scott Niedermayer's goal 2:28 into overtime sent Anaheim over Dallas, 3-2, at Honda Center.

Chris Kunitz tallied twice and Corey Perry added two assists for the Ducks, who won for the second time in five games.

Coupled with Colorado's shootout loss in Edmonton, Anaheim clinched a playoff berth for the second consecutive season for the first time in franchise history.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 34 saves to earn the win.

Mike Modano and Sergei Zubov scored for the Stars, who lost for just the second time in their last six. Marty Turco made 32 stops in the loss.

Midway through the extra session, Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin held the puck at the right point for an open skater. Niedermayer slipped into a spot between the circles, accepted the pass, and beat Turco with a rising wrister that hit the net just under the crossbar.

"I just felt I was in a good spot to shoot," Niedermayer said. "He gave me a little bit of room. I think both teams played really hard and it was kind of like a playoff game."

With the win, Anaheim ties Detroit with 100 points, and moves within one point of top-seeded Nashville. Despite the overtime loss, Dallas remains in seventh place in the Western Conference, one point behind idle Minnesota.

Each team tallied once on the power play in the first period.

Kunitz banged home the rebound of Andy McDonald's shot from the slot at 14:19, then Zubov hit the net 1:41 later.

After a scoreless second period, Dallas jumped ahead 2-1 with 1:40 played in the third as Modano circled the net from left to right and snuck one through Giguere from a sharp angle in tight.

Kunitz answered with a power-play goal, his second of the game, taking the puck from beneath the feet of a Dallas defender in the slot and slamming the puck past Turco at 4:56.

"I liked the way we competed," said Dallas head coach Dave Tippett. "I thought Turco gave us some big saves, and we fumbled a bit with the puck, but Giguere made some great saves for them too."
