NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Edmonton
(Friday, March 23rd)
Final Score: Edmonton 4, Colorado 3 (SO)
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Marty Reasoner's tally in the fifth round of the shootout was the game-winner, as Edmonton snapped a 12-game winless streak with a 4-3 triumph over Colorado at Rexall Place.
Ales Hemsky, Petr Sykora and Joffrey Lupul scored for the Oilers, who won for the first time since February 23 in Detroit.
Dwayne Roloson posted a season-high 43 saves to earn the win.
Tyler Arnason notched a pair of assists and Brad Richardson, Joe Sakic and Marek Svatos scored for the Avalanche, which saw their four-game win streak halted. With their point earned in the loss, Colorado moved within five points of Calgary which holds the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Peter Budaj took the loss despite stopping 19-of-22 shots in regulation and four of five in the shootout.
After each of the first eight shooters were denied, Reasoner broke the streak with a goal high to the blocker side on Budaj. Wojtek Wolski followed for the Avs, but flubbed his chance and the Oilers skated away victorious.
Tied after 40 minutes of play, the Avs went back on top 3-2 when Svatos pushed a loose puck through Roloson while standing just outside the crease at 4:40. Brett McLean and Arnason worked behind the net to get the puck out in front, and it trickled through two players before Svatos saw it clearly and knocked it home for the Avs' second power-play goal of the game.
However, Lupul tied the game with 1:47 left in regulation, a goal Budaj would like to have back. The young winger let the puck go from the left side and it slipped untouched and unscreened through the Colorado netminder's pads.
Richardson gave the visitors a 1-0 lead when he found some open space at the inner edge of the left circle, scoring on a wrister at 9:02 of the first.
Sakic doubled Colorado's lead on a power-play goal 52 seconds into the second, but Hemsky provided an answer on the man advantage for the Oilers with 7:21 played for a 2-1 game.
Sykora tied the game, 2-2, with 7:42 left in the middle stanza when his slapper from the point sailed past a screened Budaj for a power-play marker.
