NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Anaheim

(Wednesday, February 7th)

Final Score: San Jose 3, Anaheim 2

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Milan Michalek scored the game-winner late in the third period to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in the back end of an important home-and-home series at the Honda Center.

Jonathan Cheechoo had two goals and Ryane Clowe added three assists for the Sharks, who bounced back from Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Anaheim in San Jose to remain five points behind the Ducks for first place in the Pacific Division.

Vesa Toskala made 20 saves and Joe Thornton added two assists for San Jose, which has won two of its last three games.

Teemu Selanne and Scott Thornton each scored a goal and Ilja Bryzgalov stopped 26 shots for the Ducks, who have dropped two of their last three.

San Jose was trailing 2-1 after Anaheim scored quickly in the third period, but the Sharks took the lead with a pair of goals after the halfway mark of the final frame.

The Sharks tied the game when, on a 3-on-2 rush, Joe Thornton made a pass from the top of the left circle to Clowe, who slid a pass from the high slot to the low right side where Cheechoo wristed a shot over the left shoulder of Bryzgalov with 9:24 to play.

San Jose gained a 3-2 lead when a slap shot from the high slot by Marc-Edouard Vlasic was tipped between the pads of Bryzgalov by Michalek with 3:46 to play.

Anaheim pulled its goaltender and had a 6-on-4 advantage for the final minute of play after Patrick Rissmiller was called for delay of game, but the Ducks were unable to net the equalizer.

Neither squad got on the scoreboard in the first period with Bryzgalov making nine saves and Toskala eight.

The Sharks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Scott Thornton made a backhand pass from the low right side to the slot where Cheechoo one-timed it off the back crossbar. The goal was initially waved off and play was allowed to continue for 1:36, but after a whistle the play was reviewed and determined to be a goal.

Anaheim, though, scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead.

Selanne took a pass in his own end and flew down the ice. From the top of the right circle he cranked a slap shot that beat Toskala over the right shoulder with 5:08 left in the second.

Early in the third period, Todd Marchant grabbed a turnover at the left boards and pass the puck down low to Dustin Penner. From the right side Penner threw a shot on net that Toskala saved, but the rebound went right out front and Scott Thronton banged it in just 44 seconds into the final stanza.
