NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Pittsburgh

(Saturday, April 7th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 2, NY Rangers 1

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins closed out the regular season with a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena.

Sidney Crosby had two assists to finish the season with a league-leading 120 points for the Penguins, who won their last two games of the regular season.

Crosby at the age of 19 becomes the youngest player in NHL history to finish the league with the most points.

Gary Roberts and Mark Recchi each had a goal for Pittsburgh (47-24-11), which will start the playoffs in Ottawa.

"You work all season to get to this point," said Crosby. "This is crunch time. Last year, I remember having the season over. Now I'm excited for the playoffs to start. Watching them wasn't fun. It's nice being in it now. A lot of us are looking forward to it."

Petr Prucha scored the lone goal and Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves for the Rangers, who dropped two of their last three games in the regular season.

New York (42-30-10) will start its hunt for the Stanley Cup in Atlanta.

"It took a little while for both teams to get their wheels under them," said Rangers head coach Tom Renney. "Then as you get power play opportunities your able to gain momentum and, of course, if you score you're up and running. We took seven penalties tonight and the forced us to play shorthanded too often."

The Penguins grabbed a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal just 53 seconds into the second period as Crosby's point shot was saved, but the rebound went right to Roberts and he buried it in the back of the net.

Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead with another power-play goal as Crosby sent a pass from the low left boards out front where Recchi one-timed it past Lundqvist with 4:06 left in the second.

New York got on the scoreboard just 1:50 into the final period when Ryan Callahan blasted a shot from the low right side that Fleury saved, but the rebound went right to Prucha and he tapped it in for his 22nd goal of the season.

However, the Rangers were unable to net the equalizer despite a total of 12 shots in the final period.
