NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at New Jersey

(Saturday, February 3rd)

Final Score: New Jersey 3, Buffalo 2

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner each had a goal and an assist to help the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Continental Airlines Arena.

John Madden scored the other goal and Martin Brodeur stopped 15 shots for the Devils, who stopped a two-game slide.

"Defensively you can't ask for a better game than that," said Brodeur. "We didn't have any crucial turnovers and that is key against a team that is known for its offensive prowess."

Chris Drury and Teppo Numminen each had a goal and Ryan Miller stopped 34 shots in the loss for the Sabres, who had won their previous two games.

New Jersey had a total of 22 shots against 12 for Buffalo heading into the third period, but the Sabres had a 1-0 lead.

However, three goals separated by just 2:31 gave the Devils a 3-1 lead.

Madden tied the game when his shot from the left side deflected off the foot of a Sabre and into the net just 2:02 in.

Just 23 seconds later, Langenbrunner gave the Devils the lead when his initial shot was stopped by Miller, but he forced the puck under the right pad of the goaltender for a 2-1 lead.

New Jersey capped the onslaught when Langenbrunner fed a pass from the right point to the slot where Parise slapped the puck into the right corner of the net at the 4:33 mark.

The Sabres cut their deficit in half when, on a 3-on-2 rush, Jochen Hecht rifled a pass from the left circle to the right where Numminen snapped a wrister into the back of the net with 4:58 to play.

However, Buffalo was unable to net the equalizer.

Buffalo grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Drury's wraparound from the left side went past Brodeur 7:18 in.

Miller was busy in the first period as he made 15 saves, including a glove save on Jay Pandolfo shot from point-blank range.

Neither team got on the scoreboard in the second period despite each squad having two power plays. New Jersey had seven shots while Buffalo had six in the frame.
