(Tuesday, April 3rd)
Final Score: NY Islanders 3, NY Rangers 2 (SO)
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Wade Dubielewicz stopped 36 of 38 shots and Miroslav Satan scored the lone shootout goal as the New York Islanders avoided playoff elimination with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers at Nassau Coliseum.
Dubielewicz stopped Michael Nylander, Brendan Shanahan and Jaromir Jagr in the shootout, while Satan beat Henrik Lundqvist with a backhander in the first round.
"I'm just happy," Dubielewicz said. "I'm happy we're still alive. I don't know what else happened in the NHL, but we had to win to stay alive and that's what we did. And I'm excited."
Arron Asham and Alexei Yashin also tallied for the Islanders, who are four points behind Montreal for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Chris Campoli notched two assists for the Isles.
Shanahan and Nylander had goals for the Rangers, who would've clinched a playoff berth with a win over the Islanders. The Rangers have 92 points and are currently tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the sixth spot in the East.
Lundqvist made 32 saves in the loss.
"We knew they would come hard, they always do that here, it's not a surprise for us," Lundqvist said. "I think they got two really lucky goals, they hit our own D twice."
The Islanders took a 1-0 lead just 2:52 into the contest when Randy Robitaille centered a pass from the left circle to Asham, who slipped the disk under Lundqvist's right pad for the goal.
Yashin's cross-ice pass deflected in at the 5:02 mark in the second and extended the Islanders' lead to 2-0, but the Rangers cut within one four minutes later on Shanahan's short-handed tally.
Then, with 7:08 remaining in the period, Nylander scored to extend his point- scoring streak to seven games and even things at two. Jagr set up the goal by carrying the puck behind the net and sending a pass in front to Nylander, who sent a backhander over Dubielewicz.
The Islanders managed 16 shots on goal in the third period and the Rangers had just five, but neither team was able to light the lamp.
The Islanders and Rangers finished 0-for-3 and 0-for-5 on the power play, respectively...Nylander has four goals and six assists during his current point streak...Attendance was 15,591.
