Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Olaf Kolzig stopped 27 shots for his first shutout of the season to help the Washington Capitals to a 1-0 win over the Florida Panthers at Verizon Center.
Alexander Ovechkin scored the game's only goal for the Capitals, who snapped a six-game losing streak.
Craig Anderson made 16 saves in net for the Panthers, who have dropped two straight and are now officially out of playoff contention.
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes, with both sides having six shots apeice.
The Capitals grabbed a 1-0 lead 5:28 into the second when Brooks Laich flung a backhand pass from the low right circle to the slot where Ovechkin fired a one-timer into the left corner of the net for his 44th goal of the season.
Kolzig stopped 10 shots in the middle frame to keep Florida off the scoreboard.
Kolzig completed the shutout by stopping 11 shots in the final stanza to help Washington to the win.
Washington plays its last road game of the year on Wednesday in Atlanta...Florida plays in Tampa Bay on Friday...Florida had won five straight against Washington coming into the game, but still won the season-series, taking five out of eight games...Kolzig has 34 shutouts in his career...Washington went 0-for-4 on the power play while Florida was stopped in both of its chances.
